Helping Keep Every Student, Volunteer and Staff Member Safe

St Joseph's Nudgee College is committed to providing a safe, healthy and supportive environment for students, volunteers, staff and visitors.

Every volunteer has a role to play in identifying hazards, following safe work practices and responding appropriately to incidents and emergencies.

If you are ever unsure about what to do, stop and seek guidance from your Director, Coordinator or supervising staff member.

In an Emergency

If there is an immediate threat to life or serious injury:

1. Call 000 immediately.

2. Follow the directions of emergency services.

3. Notify the nearest College staff member, Director or Coordinator as soon as it is safe to do so.

4. Follow the College's emergency procedures.

Never place yourself or others at unnecessary risk.

Your Responsibilities

As a volunteer, you are expected to:

✔ Take reasonable care for your own health and safety.

✔ Take reasonable care for the health and safety of others.

✔ Follow reasonable instructions provided by the College.

✔ Follow College policies and emergency procedures.

✔ Report hazards, incidents and near misses promptly.

✔ Use equipment safely and only if authorised.

✔ Raise any safety concerns with your Director or Coordinator.

These points align directly with volunteer duties under the WHS Act.

Every co-curricular activity is supported by risk management processes.

Volunteers are expected to:

• follow activity procedures;

• comply with risk controls;

• raise concerns where risks change; and

• seek guidance whenever unsure.

Before Every Activity

Before commencing any activity, ask yourself:

✔ Do I understand today's activity?

✔ Do I know who is supervising?

✔ Do I know the emergency procedures?

✔ Do I know where First Aid assistance is available?

✔ Do I know how to report an incident or hazard?

✔ Am I comfortable raising a concern?

If the answer to any question is No, speak with your Director or Coordinator before proceeding.

Wellbeing

Working with young people can occasionally involve challenging situations.

If you're concerned about your own wellbeing or have been involved in a distressing incident, speak with your Director or Coordinator so appropriate support can be arranged.
